Underutilized Species under the Novel Food Regulation of the European Union
Summary Underutilized plant and animal species are promoted by many institutions because they constitute a treasure of genetic diversity. They provide useful products and help to generate incomes for the rural populations in developing countries.
The importation of products derived from underutilized species into the European Union, however, can be tedious, costly and in the worst case impossible because of the stipulations of the Novel Food Regulation of the EU. Which consequences does this regulation have and what can be done to solve the problems that arise?
