Underutilized Plant and Animal Species and the EU Novel Food Regulation - An Overview of Potentials and Constraints

Summary
This paper attempts to give some answers to this question. In chapter 1, an introduction to the novel food topic is given from a historical perspective. Chapter 2 provides an overview of efforts to promote underutilized species in international cooperation for development. Objectives, contents and conceptual weaknesses of the NFR are described in chapter 3. Chapter 4 highlights the nature of the problem with underutilized species and the NFR. Proposals for solutions are included in chapter 5. In chapter 6 proposals for enabling activities in partner countries are presented. Specific recommendations addressed to the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) are included in chapter 7. Chapter 8 contains an overview of information sources on underutilized species and the NFR with particular emphasis on internet sources.
